I feel that the most fun I’m having when doing web dev is actually when I’m doing programming, rather than working in a GUI like WordPress or Divi. I enjoy the nature of solving puzzles, and building custom solutions with pure code. There’s something very creative and technical about it, and there’s something that just feels really cool when looking at all the different code in a program.
I’m writing this because I feel that I get bored sometimes working on web development projects. However, I also have the feeling that certain projects hold my interest far more than others. I suppose my goal should be to focus on working on the projects I want more, and not so much on those that I don’t want. As a freelancer, this is totally possible. I don’t have to say “yes” to everything – but if I don’t, that means I need to be searching for more jobs. There is nothing wrong with that either, but it takes a bit of work.
However, once you start looking for jobs, it’s actually really fun. Searching through each project to see what people’s requirements are, writing offers to them, doing interviews, negotiating, is all part of a fun process that feels like searching for gems in the bushes. So I recommend to myself and others, if we feel like we are bored for long periods of time working as a web developer, to try other things. I was talking to my sister the other day, and we were saying that there are so many areas in one’s field to explore. There is no need to stay in just one. You can for example do marketing as a web developer, do design, teach coding to others, work on making videos, work more on making a blog. There are endless possiblilties.
I love different things about web development, and I want to keep in mind to focus on those things that I enjoy most, to keep myself loving this career as long as possible (maybe for many decades? if it even exists that long) and to keep working on the things that pull me in the most.
